Thank you Mr. Gardner (and your staff) for a peak into a small part of your life. The blogs, videos, photos, etc. are so inspiring that I’ve decided to take action and start where I am.

I am a life/long artist (dancer/actress), new mother (to a two-year old girl), and wife (to the man in my life who supports me unconditionally).

For years I believed that I could not be an artist and a business woman. I now stand proudly in my belief that I can do anything. I’ve always had an interest in business/entrepreneurship and now I am pursuing it, unapologetically.

Thank you again.
You’ll be hearing from me soon!

Hi Chris

My name is Kate Rogalska. I am Polish woman leaving and – as you could say – pursuing my dream of happiness in London. I was born and raised in communist Poland, in typical family with drinking, violent father, undervalued and scared mother, and two younger siblings which I was a mother figure for some time. Times were interesting enough- with political transformation but no changes in mentality of being helpless and constantly oppressed – I always felt I was leaving somebody else’s life rather than mine. Since I moved to England 6 years ago I know what life can be – how hard and challenging, but worthy and beautiful.
When I was reading your book (The pursuit of happyness), I felt your loneliness amongst adults and their cruelty, I understood luck of role model in your life and I smiled, remembering my cravings for cigarettes when the times where bad for me. I too had to make those choices of having something to eat or buying a ticket to get to work or collage. Although never been on the street I was homeless for almost a year, leaving under friend’s roof. One of my previous jobs was to manage hostels for homeless, refugees, young, single mothers and ex convicts. I have seen and heard a lot of stories… sometimes so sad that some of my friends are having difficulties to believe me…
I am writing to you to appreciate you and your spirit you share so honestly and openly with others.
I am writing to you because:
You could be an alcoholic like your father; I could be an alcoholic like my father
You could become a violent man, with wrong attitude to life; I have been in violent relationship and one day I almost grabbed the knife to hurt my abuser.
You believed you are worth more, that you and your children deserve more and better. I had to learn to believe that – after years of putting myself down and everybody else in front.
I am writing to you because you are black and I am white and coming from completely different backgrounds - we both know what “being green” means.
Thank you for listening.
Kate

Hello Mr.Gardner. I am a high school student that watched the movie “The pursuit of Happiness” which was of course based on your life. You wanna know something? I learned a lot from you. I learned that no matter what obstacles come about in your life that stop you from persuing your dreams, you can always over come those obstacles. So thank you Mr.Gardner for sharing your story with the world and inspiring young people of today like me.

Posted by Dynaisha Scroggins on December 7, 2009

Mr. Gardner, your life experience was a tradgedy. I am so happy how you turned out. You let many people know that there is a way out of anything. All you have to do is try, keep trying, and you will succeed. You show me that for everything i have i need to accept and not be greedy because many people out there doesnt have half the things i have. So, i need to appreciate what i have and how to use it spraingly.

Hi Chris, I just watched the movie DVD “The Pursuit of Happyness” with a group of friends. I even went to search you in live interview from the Youtube. There were many exciting and fruitful discussion among my group of friends after watching the DVD together. You are indeed very inspiring and had provoked many of us to think about life. One of the very interesting observations that we had was that we found you did not possess any bitterness despite your difficult circumstances, even though you did not even have a pleasant childhood. With this, I’m a little curious, may I ask how did you manage your emotion throughout your difficult years and is it true that you did not harbor bitterness or blame others for your previous mishap? I believe you have so much to offer in your life from your advise.

Thank you very much…. smile

You are definitely an inspiration. It’s like a lifeline to this burned out single divorced mother of 7 children, working for $9k a year and living in a 2 bedroom house… Although 5 of my children are currently in college, its still very hard to see the forest for the trees when I’m feeling stranded on a desert island and wondering how much longer can I hang in there before I can experience the fruits of all the laboring, struggling and suffering.

I’m unemployed for the 1st time in 25 yrs. It’s been less than 6 mos, & I’m reading Start Where You Are as part of my personal development. I’m mildly annoyed by a stmt made in Lesson #41, God’s in the Details, keyword: Reverence.  The reader is told that the next time they see someone on the street begging, if they want to help, before leaving a restaurant to have their half-eaten food wrapped up to go and to hand it to the next hungry person who crosses their path.  NONSENSE! Who wants to eat something you’ve already breathed on and picked over?  Where is the DIGNITY in that?  If a person really wanted to help another human being, at least you can afford them
their dignity with a FRESH, HOT sandwich or whatever your money can manage.  POVERTY doesn’t equate to LESS RESPECT!

Mr Gardner,

Just recently I picked up the audio version of “Start where you are.“at our local library. Thanks! I am only on disc 5 so far and you have made me laugh, cry and think. I am in sales and was driving in Chicago so you know what traffic is like when you got to the “pen and the business card” I almost lost it. I have looked at people I am associated with and wondered on the days that they didn’t have a pen what the heck they were thinking. Obviously not about making a sale.

Tears rolled when you speak of your children. I was also a single father kids 4 and 12 when mom decided to leave. That was the sales pitch of my life. She wanted to party and through it all I sat as calmly as I could muster and explained that if she wanted to go and party she didn’t need the kids hanging on her. I would take custody and she could see them whenever she wanted. Whatever I said I said it right because I got custody, even the judge couldn’t believe it. But she didn’t fight it. I have been happy about that decision ever since. The youngest turn 30 this year and is earning a masters while working full time.

You have stirred up a thousand thoughts with your comments and the parallels in our lives up to a point are uncanny. I am adopted. I know my mother now passed. My step father, the only father I have ever known was a career Navy man and I followed and served in the Navy from 1969 to 1976. As I said I took responsibility for my children and raised them. Now I am an Independent Sales Representative. There are many other little things that parallel your story but I don’t want to bore anyone.

The last thing I wanted to thank you for is the force with which you put your faith out front no apologies. It is refreshing and uplifting. May God continue to bless you as you touch so many lives.

Have a wonderful Easter!

Chris, I don’t want to embarrass you by going on at too much length about how much respect I have for you, but I wanted to simply say that this world could use a few thousand more of you.
We would have most of our problems under control in a flash, and the rest well underway of getting there, too.
I also must say how great it is to see how gladly you share your wealth of knowledge, character, and faith to the betterment of anyone you see needs help.
You, sir, understand what the Bible and the wisest of people have always know, which is that the best way to help those in need is not to simply do for them, but instead to SHOW THEM THE WAY.
You are a giant, and I pray for a very long and fruitful quest in your personal mission for success in all things.
God bless you, Chris!
